Final Call: Light Pollution Forum

The Green Earth (TGE) is organizing a forum on 8th July on light pollution. The forum will feature a computer model developed over the past two years by TGE for the detection of light pollution. Additionally, the engineering consultant Dr. Jimmy Tong will introduce the latest developments in light pollution control, both locally and globally. The impact of light pollution on the environment will be discussed by entomologist Mr. Vor Yiu, who will share his anecdotes of fireflies and attempt to find sustainable solutions. A documentary on light pollution will also be premiered.

Limited seats are available; so please register now.

Regulation of Disposable and Degradable Plastics

The public consultation on the regulation of disposable plastics held by the Legislative Council on 29th April was attended by TGE’s Executive Director to lobby for the regulation of degradable plastics.

During the consultation, the Environmental Protection Department stated that it would regulate all products that contain plastic. Moreover, the manufacture, sale, and distribution of oxo-degradable plastics will be banned.

Farewell and Take care

Hahn Chu, one of the founders of The Green Earth, will retire from his full-time position by the end of June after working with us for the past seven years to start a new life with his family.

Throughout his time with us, Hahn has dedicated himself to leading the team and advocating for environmental policies. He has also been instrumental in monitoring several important issues such as short-lived plastics, producer responsibility schemes, municipal solid waste charging, light pollution, pollution by HK Gun Club, and waste trade. Thanks to his efforts, improvements in these areas have been seen gradually. We wish him good health and peaceful nights of sleep.

The First Leave No Trace Nocturnal Walk

Our Jockey Club Leave No Trace Education Programme is now promoting sustainable countryside.  The first nocturnal family walk took place in the Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve.  We saw Asian common toads, and the Günther’s frogs’ sang their courtship in harmony like a choir.

Multifarious nocturnal creatures were spotted while the attentive children even alerted us to mosquito patches lying on the ground, which they promptly picked up.

There's no better way to apply Leave No Trace than through an outdoor eco-tour.

Handmade Trails Illustrations

Handmade Trails Illustrations is a collaboration between TGE and local illustrator Che Ting to show the issues facing Hong Kong’s mountain trails and the nuts and bolts of our environmentally-friendly trail repair work.

‘Events Go Green’ Runs until Feb 2024

As the pandemic ends, events are making a comeback. The Jockey Club Events Go Green Programme will continue to run till February 2024.  Event organisers are welcome to book our free waste reduction support (for charity events only) or Green Event Volunteer workshop.

Launch of The Green Earth – Charity Woodland

TGE invites the public to adopt native seedlings to support The Green Earth – Charity Woodland, which adds to the biodiversity of country parks and increases the eco-value of tree planting sites.

TGE Charity Woodland was launched on 20th May, and since then, 120 native seedlings have been planted by their ‘adoptive parents’ for the betterment of the woodland.

Plantation Enrichment Programme
Spring 2023 Planting Completed!

This spring marked the first tree planting season after the pandemic, and we were thrilled to gather with numerous volunteers and participants in the country park to plant saplings together!

This year, we joined hands with 500 individuals from the community and 16 business organisations. Together, we planted 2,550 saplings, including 28 local native species. We hope for favorable weather conditions and rapid growth of the saplings. Please stay tuned for updates on our plantation site.

Coming Soon《Night Walk for The Green Earth》

Save the date on 27 January 2024 and support our upcoming walkathon – the Night Walk for The Green Earth.  Get closer to nature and explore the beauty of our country parks at night. All funds raised will be used to support TGE’s environmental campaigns and education programmes.

Team up with your colleagues, friends, and family to enjoy the following:
- the Walk at its magic moment from daylight to sunset
- meeting wildlife in the dark
- rethinking our environmental challenges

Stay tuned for more details in July.

With your kind support given to The Green Earth, we could make a small difference. Your encouragement and support will certainly help us to keep moving forward on the challenging green journey.
